PRFM for Melasma
Melasma is a chronic skin condition which causes areas of brown to grey pigmentation on the face. When present in pregnant women, it is known as chloasma or “the mask of pregnancy”. Melasma commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin, often in symmetrical patterns. Melasma can affect both men and women, but is more commonly found in women and individuals with darker, tanned skin, living in environments with intense sun exposure. The exact cause of melasma is unknown but there are several factors that contribute to it such as sun exposure, pregnancy, changes in hormones, and occasionally some cosmetics. Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM), derived from your own blood, is a revolutionary new product and procedure that can be used to improve the signs of melasma by stimulating cell growth and collagen production. The improvement to pigmentation that occurs with this treatment is due to the increase in skin volume. Platelet derived growth factors play a significant role in blood vessel formation as well as in the synthesis of collagen and components of the extracellular matrix, including hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is known for its ability to increase skin volume, resulting in visibly healthier looking skin.

Selphyl® is an organic alternative to cosmetic enhancement that uses a Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) from your own blood. Once injected, Selphyl® slowly releases a variety of growth factors that stimulate your body’s natural course of tissue restoration and collagen production. New skin cell growth is generated and, over time, leads to a stronger collagen support structure. Selphyl® has been FDA approved in the United States and certified safe in Europe for many years. It was first used in cardiac surgery in 1987 and is now used in many different fields of medicine including sports medicine, orthopaedics, oral surgery and aesthetic medicine. Worldwide, there have been more than 45,000 procedures performed in multiple countries. This technology has also been used extensively in plastic surgery, orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, and soft tissue regeneration for years.

A small amount of your blood is drawn and processed through a patented 6 minute centrifuge method to separate and concentrate the platelets and serum from other blood components. The Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix is then injected into the areas of visible aging. There is a slight prick from the needle, much like a mosquito bite, which lasts a couple of seconds. Recovery after Selphyl® treatment is easy. Pain medication is not required and you will only experience mild swelling and possibly mild bruising for a few days. Gradually, over a course of weeks, the dermal thickness of the breast area will improve and your skin quality will change.
There is minor inflammation or swelling in the skin of the treated area from the treatment. This normally resolves well within 24 hours but has been reported to last as long as 48 hours for some clients. Some patients may also experience some tenderness, itching or mild bruising at the injection sites. All clients can resume normal activities immediately after receiving treatment.
Selphyl® stimulates migration of different cells to the treated area. This migration occurs over the following ten days after treatment. The proliferation of collagen and cell growth becomes visible after 2-3 weeks, at which point the treated area will start to look smoother. This process continues over 3 months, at which time aesthetic improvement from the treatment is maximized. While results are visible with one treatment, more significant improvements and longer duration of improvement are achieved when a minimum of two treatments are done 6 to 8 weeks apart. Results last up to two years.
In order to enhance the effectiveness of your Selphyl® treatment there are some medications, vitamins and minerals that should be avoided prior to treatment. A list of these medications will be provided during consultation.
