About Blu-U® Photodynamic Therapy
Blu-U® Photodynamic therapy is performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan, which is activated with the correct wavelength of Blu Light. Levulan is a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA), which is a natural substance found throughout your body. The Levulan undergoes a chemical reaction when Blu Light of a particular wavelength and intensity is applied, resulting in a therapeutic effect. Levulan has been used safely and extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions, and it is approved by the FDA and Health Canada for the treatment of sun damaged skin.
Prior to Treatment
Prior to your Acne Blue Light Therapy treatment you will be scheduled for a complimentary consultation with a SKIN specialist who will review previous and current skin care, perform a detailed skin analysis, and discuss general health history before recommending a customized treatment program. As the number of treatments varies from patient to patient, a price quote will be given during consultation.
Once the Levulan is applied and has remained on the skin for 30 minutes, the treatment continues with the Blu Light session which lasts approximately 8 minutes. It is during this period that acne bacteria are destroyed. The special wavelength of light provided by the Blu Light system activates porphyrin production in the bacteria, which subsequently kills the bacteria, thus reducing the acne lesions. Any skin type can be treated with no side effects.
After treatment is completed, patients may experience some temporary reddening and minimal swelling of the acne/lesions and the surrounding skin. Generally reddening and any swelling will disappear after a few days. Treated areas may crust or flake following treatment. This indicates that any pre-cancerous lesions have been successfully treated. The skin is very sensitive to sunlight for 24-48 hours after treatment. Due to the photosensitizing nature of the treatment, it is extremely important patients should remain indoors and avoid bright light and sunshine for the first 48 hours. Patients should use sunscreen daily for at least 4 weeks following treatment regardless of the time of year or if it is overcast or cloudy.
Most patients using Blu-U® Photodynamic Therapy for acne enjoy a dramatic improvement in their skin. Prior to this revolutionary technology, the only treatment to show such good results in clearing acne was Accutane, which has many limitations, including systemic side effects.
Patients will typically see a gradual, rather than sudden, improvement and clearing of the treated area. The number and frequency of the treatments required is dependent on individual skin characteristics and response to treatments, which will be discussed during consultation. Usually, up to four treatments are required at one-month intervals.
