PRP Injections for Melasma
Melasma is a chronic skin condition which causes areas of brown to grey pigmentation on the face. When present in pregnant women, it is known as chloasma or “the mask of pregnancy”. Melasma commonly affects the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose and chin, often in symmetrical patterns. Melasma can affect both men and women, but is more commonly found in women and individuals with darker, tanned skin, living in environments with intense sun exposure. The exact cause of melasma is unknown but there are several factors that contribute to it such as sun exposure, pregnancy, changes in hormones, and occasionally some cosmetics. Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM), derived from your own blood, is a revolutionary product and procedure that can be used to improve the signs of melasma by stimulating cell growth and collagen production. The improvement to pigmentation that occurs with this treatment is due to the increase in skin volume. The improvement to pigmentation that occurs with this treatment is due to the increase in skin volume. Growth factors play a significant role in blood vessel formation as well as in the synthesis of collagen and components of the extracellular matrix, including hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is known for its ability to increase skin volume, resulting in visibly healthier looking skin.

About PRFM Injections
SKIN’s PRFM Injections represent an alternative to cosmetic enhancement. These injections slowly release a variety of growth factors that stimulate your body’s natural course of tissue restoration and collagen production. New skin cell growth is generated and, over time, leads to a stronger collagen support structure. This technology has also been used extensively in plastic surgery, orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery, and soft tissue regeneration for years.
SKIN’s PRFM Injections are injected into the areas of visible aging. There is a slight prick from the needle, much like a mosquito bite, which lasts a couple of seconds. Recovery after treatment is relatively easy. Pain medication is not required, and patients will only experience mild swelling and/or bruising for a few days. A few may also have minor itching, but this is only a mild irritation. Gradually, within a few weeks, depending on the patient, the dermal thickness of the treated area will begin to increase.
There is minor inflammation or swelling in the skin of the treated area from the treatment. This normally resolves well within 24 hours but has been reported to last as long as 48 hours for some clients. Some patients may also experience some tenderness, itching or mild bruising at the injection sites. All clients can resume normal activities immediately after receiving treatment.
SKIN’s PRFM Injections stimulate the migration of different cells to the treated area. This migration occurs over the ten days following treatment. The proliferation of collagen and cell growth becomes visible after 2-3 weeks, at which point the treated area will start to look smoother and clearer. This process continues over 3 months, at which time aesthetic improvement from the treatment is maximized. While results are visible with one treatment, more significant improvements and longer duration of improvement are achieved when a minimum of two treatments are done 6 to 8 weeks apart. Results can last up to two years.
In order to enhance the effectiveness of your treatment there are some medications, vitamins and minerals that should be avoided prior to treatment. A list of these medications will be provided during consultation.
